History of the Organization
Since its inception in 1988, Strings has presented the highest quality chamber music and other classical programming to both local and tourist audiences. During its history, the festival has added jazz, blues, country, world, and various other art forms to its programming in response to community requests. A series of Youth Concerts in the Strings' performing arts tent was begun in 1995, with Touring Youth Concerts into schools added in 1997 and Family Concerts in 1998. Many of the youth programs feature collaborations with other local performing arts organizations. A free weekly discussion/demonstration series devoted to the continuing education of the Strings' audience has been produced since 1990. Through the years, a number of other presentations have been added so that nearly half of the productions are now presented free of charge.
Throughout the summer, Strings provides the musical backbone for the community of Steamboat Springs. The festival provides world-class music for the residents of Steamboat Springs and visitors, and smaller communities within northwest Colorado such as Hayden, Craig, Meeker, Oak Creek, Walden, and Yampa. Each year between 150 and 170 world-class musicians, including Grammy winners and nominees, competition winners, and young rising stars embrace the friendly, warm environment of Steamboat Springs and provide a format for locals and visitors to come together in a relaxed casual environment to enjoy truly great music. With the help of the Board, Guild, Advisory Council and community volunteers many activities are planned that bring the musicians into the community.
Senior Citizen Outreach Program The Young Artists-in-Residence present 10 string quartet chamber music concerts programmed for our older audiences. These mid-day concerts tour through Routt County to the nutrition and assisted/full care living centers.
Senior Outreach Concerts: Programmed for our oldest residents, each summer, Strings' Young Artists in Residence perform ten mid-day concerts throughout Routt County in Senior Nutrition Sites and Assisted and Full Care Living Facilities. These programs feature movements from the delightful quartet repertoire of the masters and refreshing commentary by the musicians. Reaching seniors from age 65 to 100, this program brings great music to those who cannot come to the Tent.
