The Dynamics of Growth in Resort Communities
The Dynamics of Growth in Resort Communities … Adapting to Change in the Yampa Valley
Monday, December 4, 2006
Centennial Hall Downtown Steamboat Springs, CO

During the 1990’s, the growth of counties which are home to major resorts or national
park gateways was more than double that of the nation as a whole. The boom transforming these
communities is based on lifestyle and environment, rather than traditional economic
development. This creates a unique challenge for those communities: the growth they are
experiencing is threatening those qualities driving that growth.

Jonathan Schechter of Charture Institute in Jackson, Wyoming will present the unique
dynamics of growth and change in resort communities. These communities believe they are
tourist towns, but this is no longer true. Dealing with the pace and magnitude of change is
extremely difficult. It’s harder still when decisions are based on an inaccurate understanding of
the forces underlying that growth and change.
